It has been almost four weeks since my last update on the construction of my VWE modules. Quite a lot has happened during that time, both on and off the workbench.

First, Bruno Mars was in Berlin. I saw him two years ago in Kuala Lumpur, but with the release of his new album Romantic, I simply had to see him again. DJ Pee Wee (aka Anderson.Paak) was one of the opening acts and also joined Bruno on stage to perform several Silk Sonic songs.

Then came the 40°C heatwave that swept across Germany and much of Europe. It was almost unbearable. I always expected summer temperatures of around 31–32°C in Germany and about 35°C in Malaysia, but seeing temperatures exceed 40°C is becoming the new reality. Compared to that, 32°C now almost feels normal.

Last Saturday, a friend and I joined a special rail excursion to Zell am See in Austria, where we also visited the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn (PLB). It was an exciting but exhausting trip. The weather was a pleasant 30°C throughout the day, but we started our journey at 4:00 am and did not get home until 1:30 am on Sunday morning.

Despite everything else that was going on, I still managed to make some progress on the modules. I ordered the leg holders from H0fine, along with the necessary bolts and nuts from an online retailer. After clearing out my cellar and making space for my FREMO modules, I was finally able to complete the remaining work. The “Effem (Eitze)” module is now standing on its own legs for the first time.

The redesign also shortened the overall layout by 400 mm. I moved the 400 × 400 mm section to the end, where it has become an independent module named “Kuhweg”. Because it is much shorter, it only requires two legs and relies on the adjoining modules for support.

Over the next few weeks and months, I will begin laying the track and turnouts before carrying out extensive electrical and running tests. With a bit of luck, both modules will make their debut at the FREMO N-RE meeting in November.

Vier Wochen später: „Effem (Eitze)“ steht auf eigenen Beinen

Seit meinem letzten Beitrag über den Bau meiner VWE-Module sind inzwischen fast vier Wochen vergangen. In dieser Zeit ist einiges passiert – sowohl auf als auch neben der Modellbahn.

Zunächst war Bruno Mars in Berlin. Ich hatte ihn bereits vor zwei Jahren in Kuala Lumpur live erlebt, aber mit der Veröffentlichung seines neuen Albums Romantic musste ich einfach noch einmal hin. DJ Pee Wee (alias Anderson.Paak) war einer der Voracts und stand später auch gemeinsam mit Bruno auf der Bühne, um mehrere Songs von Silk Sonic zu performen.

Dann kam die Hitzewelle mit Temperaturen von über 40 °C, die Deutschland und weite Teile Europas erfasst hat. Es war kaum auszuhalten. Mit Sommertemperaturen von 31 bis 32 °C in Deutschland und etwa 35 °C in Malaysia habe ich gerechnet – aber über 40 °C? Das scheint inzwischen die neue Realität zu werden. Dagegen fühlen sich 32 °C mittlerweile fast schon angenehm an.

Am vergangenen Samstag waren ein Freund und ich mit einem Sonderzug nach Zell am See unterwegs und haben dabei auch die Pinzgauer Lokalbahn (PLB) besucht. Die Fahrt war ein echtes Erlebnis, aber auch ziemlich anstrengend. Das Wetter war mit rund 30 °C zwar angenehm, allerdings begann unser Tag bereits um 4:00 Uhr morgens und wir waren erst um 1:30 Uhr in der Nacht zum Sonntag wieder zu Hause.

Trotz allem ging es auch beim Modulbau weiter. Ich habe die Modulbeinhalter von H0fine sowie Schrauben und Muttern bei einem Onlinehändler bestellt. Nachdem ich meinen Keller ausgemistet und Platz für die FREMO-Module geschaffen hatte, konnte ich die restlichen Arbeiten abschließen. Das Modul „Effem (Eitze)“ steht damit zum ersten Mal auf eigenen Beinen.

Durch die Überarbeitung des Entwurfs ist das Modul insgesamt 400 mm kürzer geworden. Das 400 × 400 mm große Segment habe ich an das Streckenende verlegt und daraus ein eigenständiges Modul mit dem Namen „Kuhweg“ gemacht. Aufgrund seiner geringen Länge kommt es mit nur zwei Beinen aus und wird von den benachbarten Modulen mitgetragen.

In den nächsten Wochen und Monaten geht es an den Gleis- und Weichenbau. Anschließend stehen umfangreiche elektrische Tests und Probefahrten auf dem Programm. Ich hoffe, dass beide Module beim FREMO-N-RE-Treffen im November ihren ersten Einsatz haben werden.
