FREMO N-RE is a modular model railway standard developed by FREMO (Freundeskreis Europäischer Modellbahner e.V.), focusing on N scale (1:160) layouts that represent European standard gauge railways. The acronym ‘N-RE’ stands for ‘N’ scale, ‘Regelspur’ (standard gauge in German), and ‘Europa’ (Europe), indicating its emphasis on European railway prototypes.
- Modular Design: Layouts are constructed from individual modules that adhere to specific standards, allowing for seamless integration into larger, collaborative setups.
- European Prototypes: The standard emphasizes accurate representation of European railway operations, including infrastructure and rolling stock.
- Technical Standards:
- Track: Utilizes Code 55 rails, corresponding to a rail height of 1.5mm, suitable for N scale modeling.
- Control System: Employs Digital Command Control (DCC) for locomotive operation.
- Standards Compliance: Aligns with NEM (Normen Europäischer Modellbahnen) standards, ensuring compatibility with commercially available products.
- Operational Focus: Designed to facilitate realistic railway operations, including shunting and timetable-based running sessions.
- Flexibility: While centered on European standard gauge, the N-RE standard is open to various operational concepts, eras, and regional settings, allowing for diverse modeling interests.

Realistic Schedule-based Train Operations
In addition to the interoperability of modules, FREMO emphasized on realistic train operations based on timetables and driver’s logbook (dt. Fahrbuchplan) with centralised train traffic controllers (CTC).
- Train driver uses FRED handheld controller (tethered / wireless) connected to LocoNet box along the route, to control the speed, direction and other DCC functions of the traction.
- Train driver receives permission to proceed, shunt or to report arrival at destination from CTC.
