z21 Review: Booster Light and Detector

It has been awhile (more than 1 year to be exact) since I touched my z21 digital controller. It lied packed neatly in the original packing. This means I have missed many firmware updates (hmm …. not a good thing to do). Anyway, even though I am not actively working on my layout, this does not mean that I have gave up the hobby. No, no way sir. You will just have to be a bit patient with my progress. This morning, I posted on a friend’s Facebook that I have 8 modules and if I work on one each … Continue reading z21 Review: Booster Light and Detector

A Review of Surprised Birthday Gift – Fleischmann z21 Digitial Starterset ÖBB Rh1116 Taurus

This is my 100th post on germaN160 thus far and so I would like to end the year by showing off my surprised birthday gift – a Fleischmann z21 Digital Startset with ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railway) Rh1116 Taurus and passenger coaches (Art. no. 931383) I wanted this set for quite some time. Guess, I was a good boy this year and thus, my Santa(rina) decided to reward me. If you have been following this blog, you would by now that I am modelling the German railways in Epoch 5/6. This era is marked by a few key characteristics, among other, … Continue reading A Review of Surprised Birthday Gift – Fleischmann z21 Digitial Starterset ÖBB Rh1116 Taurus

Prayer almost answered …. Fleischmann H0-scale ICE BR407

At last, Fleischmann answered my prayer ….(almost). The 2013 catalog shows the new HO-scale construction of the DBAG ICE BR407. This basic set comes with 4 parts (with sound) with 2 versions of 2-part extensions. So, for those of you who are looking forward to have a new ICE on your layout, Fleischmann will have them in sometime this year. I have ICE 2 from Fleischmann and I am happy with the craftmanship and finishing. Although I have not had a chance … Continue reading Prayer almost answered …. Fleischmann H0-scale ICE BR407

Turnouts Jigsaw Puzzle

I have convinced myself that I would go with Peco code 55 Universal Fine Streamline turnouts and tracks for my layout. Although code 55 is actually code 80 rails embedded onto the ties, Peco is the only manufacturer that makes flex tracks with concrete sleepers for N-scale. It is a pity that other such as Minitrix, Fleischmann, Piko and even Atlas have not being able to convince themselves to offer flex tracks with concrete sleeps. For the US model railroad manufacturer Atlas, it is understandable as most US tracks do not have concrete sleepers. But for the European/German manufacturers, hmm ….. … Continue reading Turnouts Jigsaw Puzzle

InterCity Express (ICE): The Flagship of Deutsche Bahn

The ICE (InterCity-Express) is the flagship (ie. flag carrier) of Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG). The ICE is synonymous with DB AG and is an instant brand recognition for Germany. But don’t be mistaken with other ICE especially ICE 3. The same Siemens Velaro/ICE 3 design can be found in the Netherlands (operating as HiSpeed) and Switzerland (ICE SBB). The same design is also found in China high-speed railway as CRH3C, in Spain Velaro E and in Russia Velaro RUS. For more information on ICE, visit wiki or this special issue of Eisenbahn (Railway) Journal. There are only 3 manufacturers … Continue reading InterCity Express (ICE): The Flagship of Deutsche Bahn

Another Surprise Gift: Fleischmann N-scale BR 111 E-Loco

I attended Internationale Modellbahn Ausstellung 2012 (International model railway exhibition) in Köln Messe/Deutz last Saturday. It was my first exhibition this year as I was too occupied at work and weekends to attend other exhibitions (usually I made it a point to visit 2-3 exhibitions per year). I participated in a lucky draw from Alba Publications and to my surprise and delight, I received a Fleischmann BR 111 E-Lok in DB red livery when I reached home last night. I still have not had a chance to test run it but it would make a wonderful addition to my other … Continue reading Another Surprise Gift: Fleischmann N-scale BR 111 E-Loco

Welcome to germaN160 by Trai-N-master

Welcome to germaN160 by Trai-N-master. This blog documents my first layout progress and discusses the processes, techniques and lessons learned from my first modular N-scale layout here in Germany. I called this blog germaN160, both to signify my host country and the railway I am modelling as well as my choice scale. Apparently, “germ” also means “a cell that has all the information to grow into a complete adult organism (“germ cell”). I hope that my layout will have a chance to grow into a complete layout as a life-long project. I am still learning about model railway especially in … Continue reading Welcome to germaN160 by Trai-N-master
